Is printing an investment or a loss?

When we think of printers, printing and printer consumable products do we believe they’re an investment for a business or home life? Or do we think they’re just a waste of our hard earned money?
Printing is a necessity nowadays. You can’t have a business with our documents, forms, presentations to give. You can’t have a printer at home with out printing news, homework, bills, etc. You can’t take pictures with out wanting to print them yourself anytime and what ever size imaginable. You can’t pay with checks with out them being printed with your name and bank info. Ok already, I think you got the point.
If we realize then that printing is part of our daily lives do we see it as an investment or do we suffer the pain of spending hundreds of dollars month by month?. Of course the answer is a matter of perspective. What I might see as an investment others might see it as a total loss of cash. To offer some light on the subject I want just to recount the two points of views and then let you decide:
Printing as an Investment: If we take into consideration all the ways we use the printer, some mentioned above and many other you probably can wipe out right now. Printing allows you to have information available in a physical manner (meaning other than electronically) and thus share that information. Having your printer gives you flexibility, saves you on time and you print what you need. Imagine if you had to send all that you needed printed to an off site printer company and then had to wait to see it or read it. In this immediate satisfaction world we live now time is money. New better and more economical printers come out faster than we can imagine. You can now scan, fax, copy, and print all in one machine. Printing helps you manage your time, your resources, it is a cost effective amenity that when not available or running properly it amounts more time, energy, and of course money to fix. When thinking on printer as an investment you have to raise the question of the use of OEM cartridges vs remanufactured ones. Stating the manufacturer’s point of view, in order to protect your investment you need to purchase genuine supplies to assure high yield, superior print quality, and complete guarantee for your toner or ink cartridge.
Printing as a Loss: Now if we take into consideration that total cost of the printer could be 1/8 of the total cost of printing, as per statement from Steve Pociask, president of the American Consumer Institute. He adds: “"Over the life of the printer--and by that I mean three years--you can easily spend $800 for the printer and ink." Is that a high cost for efficiency, time management, always ready to print documents, letters etc.? Is it really expensive to print as you need, when you need, what you need?
You decide…

In business printer becomes your partner. Without it paper work or documentary job is a failure.
