How to Celebrate Earth Day
Every day is Earth Day we know but as with any important date there are celebrations and commemorations of the subject, theme or person being remembered. In this case Earth is on the spot light and deserves some celebration.
We picked our favorite Earth Day activities for you, and they are as follows:
- Plant a Tree: Planning a tree helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clean pollution, and secure soil in place to prevent erosion and provide homes for a lot of biodiversity. Choose a special place to plant your tree and plan to get other earth lovers to plant as well.
- Follow the Golden R’s: Reduce, reuse, replenish, restore and recycle all day long. You can buy as little as possible and avoid heavy packaged items. Cook a special Earth Day menu supporting your local growers and food producers. Why? Well because, they don’t travel as much to deliver the products and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Avoid using disposable plates and cutlery. Carry your own cloth grocery bag, keep it in the car so you won’t forget it.
- Get children to recycle their old toys and games. This is one of my favorites. Kids nowadays have more toys than time to play with all. By giving their old toys and games to younger children who could make use of them, older children learn two lessons: One is about giving to others and the second is about reusing and recycling instead of throwing things away.
- Wear green and/or brown. Dress in environmental colors for the day; think "tree"! Wear badges if you have them that carry pithy summaries of your environmental views.
- Hold a White Elephant party: Any reason to have a party is valid; during Earth Day everyone brings an unmarked wrapped gift of a gently used item which could be books, CDs etc.
Remember: Every day is Earth Day. Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don't restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practice - every day!
Tomorrow we’ll talk about Earth Day Crafts and Projects.
