You probably have heard more about regular laser cartridges than about MICR cartridges, that is only because the cartridges called MICR (short for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) are used for check printing purposes and probably not everybody prints their own checks.

Banks and Institutions rely on (MICR) technology to read the code at the bottom of checks. As the check passes through the machine, the reader sends a magnetic charge to each check, which allows it to read the characters contained within the MICR line. The Federal Reserve and most banks require that checks be printed with MICR toner for ease of processing and to avoid rejection of the checks.
