What is a MICR Cartridge?

You probably have heard more about regular laser cartridges than about MICR cartridges, that is only because the cartridges called MICR (short for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) are used for check printing purposes and probably not everybody prints their own checks. Banks and Institutions rely on (MICR) technology to read the code at the bottom of checks. As the check passes through the machine, the reader sends a magnetic charge to each check, which allows it to read the characters contained within the MICR line. The Federal Reserve and most banks require that checks be printed with MICR toner for ease of processing and to avoid rejection of the checks.

Similar to regular laser toner cartridges there are three types of MICR cartridges and we would like to give you a short definition:

  • OEM Cartridges (Original Equipment Manufacturer) – MICR toner cartridges are new and have been fabricated and approved by the printer’s manufacturer. Usually, they are the most expensive cartridges, but they also have a tendency to be superior in quality to both “compatible” and remanufactured MICR toner. What matters the most is that by using an OEM MICR cartridges there is no risk of voiding your printer’s service warranty.

  • Compatible Cartridges – Similar to OEM cartridges, compatible ones are 100% brand new, what differs is the fact that they are on average not approved by the MICR printer manufacturer. When getting a Compatible MICR toner cartridge and to be sure that you are getting similar quality it is important to see if they have ISO 9001 certification. This certification assures several quality tests.

  • Remanufactured Cartridges – These are MICR toner cartridges that have been recycled and refilled with new MICR toner. It is important to make sure that the remanufacturing process checks for the integrity of the cartridge housing as well as integrated nozzle, electronics circuits, replace drum, then fill with exacting toner formulations. We assure our clients that ALL our MICR remanufactured cartridges have been thoroughly tested after assembly to ensure they meet or exceed OEM standards.
