When you buy a printer, you’ll discover that printer ink cartridges are mostly not interchangeable across printer manufacturers. However, in general, each printer cartridge works with a particular type of printer. If you already have an ink preference due to pricing or quality, it may be worthwhile taking that into consideration when buying a printer or when trying to decide which printer is best, Canon or HP.
Why Are Printer Cartridges Designed Like This?
Printer cartridges are specifically designed for particular types of printers because the printer ink is part of a complex and machine-tailored function, and printer designs vary between manufacturers and models. Manufacturers such as Canon use trademarked ink formulas to match specific configurations of their hardware.
Each manufacturer often uses different ink for the printheads, with dye and pigment-created formulas being among the most prominent. Dyes provide an exhaustive yield of detail and vibrant colors on prints. However, dyes are absorbed into paper, which can result in blurring, and they fade earlier than pigments.
Pigments help keep images sharp. Color pigments are merely particulates that dry on the surface of the paper, allowing a crisper image.

One Size Does Not Fit All
Many printer cartridges have a similar shape and size, so, when you buy an ink cartridge for a Canon printer, it’s important to ensure that it is also a Canon ink cartridge or at least a compatible or third-party compatible brand of ink.
There can also be different types of cartridge designs for other printer models from the same manufacturer. Some printers have specific shapes of ink tanks or incorporate a chip in the tank, which means you must use a specific ink cartridge.
Certain models may accept the same cartridges. The printers can share links, as they share many of the same hardware components. However, it is not advisable to try to use cartridges other than the ones stipulated by Canon for the particular printer model. Before buying a new cartridge, always check that it is compatible with your printer.

Black and Color Cartridges Are Not Interchangeable
You can’t put a black cartridge in a color cartridge slot. Some printers have two black ink cartridge slots to allow shades of black and gray but color slots are only for color ink. If you want to print only in black, you can change the settings on most printers to permit black printing only.
It is also important to remember that cartridge colors also aren’t interchangeable. For example, if your Canon printer uses CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key) Canon ink cartridges, it’s not possible to swap the cartridge colors around in different slots in the printer. Even though they may fit, they will not function interchangeably.
Also, be careful when using refillable cartridges to use the same color ink used originally. If you fill a color cartridge with black ink, you can cause damage to parts of the printing mechanism.
Some printers use ink with a specific viscosity to produce the droplets necessary for the details and clarity you need for your printout. The nozzles can become clogged if you use thicker ink.
Get High-Quality Prints Using Canon Ink Cartridges
Canon is known for its premium printers and ink cartridges, but it’s important to use Canon’s stipulated ink cartridges for the relevant printer model or a Canon-approved compatible brand; otherwise, you can cause irreversible damage to the printer.
If the manufacturer advertises that a particular cartridge fits a specific machine, you risk getting disappointing results, voiding the warranty and ruining the printer if the manufacturer was not approved by Cannon.
Consider Remanufactured Ink
Remanufactured ink is a great solution if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to brand OEM (original equipment manufacturer) ink. Remanufactured ink uses the original case of the cartridge that is cleaned and filled with third-party materials and then tested before being resold.
